What are young people looking for in the world of work?

I young that today border, or are already inside the world of work, bring in organizational contexts, in addition to their own values, dynamism and the capacity of questioning: fundamental aspects to be competitive and keep up with disruptive change. This is also what they expect from the Organizations in which they intend to grow professionally and humanly.

What are the three fundamental aspects that young people are looking for today in the world of work and for which they decide whether to invest time and resources in that particular professional context?

Flexibility, development opportunities and a strong attention to the issues of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are essential elements of a highly attractive organisation for a young person who has developed awareness of the role of work as a tool for self-realization that cannot ignore the balance between personal and professional life.

The stereotype linked to young people who do not want to work conceals a much deeper reality that is diametrically opposite: the desire to do is high and brings with it the need to generate value not only for himself but also for others.

Young people want to realize themselves, to leave their mark, to enhance their distinctiveness and work is the tool through which to achieve this goal.

What does this basically mean?

It is quite simply that today's young people would like to see the 60 years of age looking at the path made with a sense of fulfilment and with awareness to have carried out a career development path that has been well integrated with personal development and with the priorities of life.

We're talking about life-work balance and the possibility, as well as ability, to know how to balance professional careers, social life and their passions that help develop fundamental transversal skills.

Further to these reflections we study in concrete terms the three fundamental aspects mentioned initially and which concretely are expressed in:

  • flexibility in terms of time and space;
  • skills development and enhancement;
  • sustainability and ethics

The flexibility is an extremely heartfelt concept in the search for a balance between personal and professional life, it represents the key aspect for a good realization that takes into account spaces and times and is guided by the orientation to objectives rather than the time spent in the office. The resulting benefits, widely studied, impact on productivity and satisfaction levels.

The development and strengthening of skills represents the crowning commitment to the formation rich in theory and past years on books, a period in which the desire to put your hands in the dough and contribute to the co-construction an organisational project. Young people want to enhance their skills and develop new ones in order to create increasingly challenging opportunities and achieve their goals.

Sustainability and ethics they represent the personal commitment of young people to the ecosystem in which they live and it is for this reason that they seek the same commitment in the Organizations in which they wish to grow not only professionally. We are talking about the generation of Greta Thunberg, but not only, united by the awareness that climate change, the exploitation of emerging economies and social sustainability are current issues that need to be addressed and for which it is no longer possible to wait. This is reflected in the need to work in an Organization that is not only appropriate to the standards required, but is innovative and cutting-edge in this respect. On the other hand, man has always felt the need to feel part of something greater and that has a real global impact, this is the challenge for the Organizations today that need to accelerate and take a clear position on the issues of Corporate Social Responsibility.
