The covid and the current environment of uncertainty have had a decisive impact on the scale of individual motivational priorities and psychological health for each of us.
David Lazzari, national president of the Order of Psychologists, reporting on data related to this issue, says that anxiety and depression are on the rise, and the picture among the under-18s is dramatic, as 48 percent of them carry a range of posttraumatic symptoms.
Focusing on the work context and the needs sought over what has been recounted so far, it is no coincidence to note that in a recent Ipsos survey conducted for the World Economic Forum in 30 countries, about 28 percent of employees say they have difficulty concentrating on work after the virus spreads because of their emotional instability, 20 percent take longer to complete their tasks and 15 percent have trouble thinking, reasoning, or making decisions.
Work activity directly and indirectly affects the mental, physical, economic and social well-being of workers, with concrete impacts on the health of individuals, families and communities.
Relatedly, awareness of such an important issue has increased: 82 percent of companies surveyed consider employee health a priority, but many do not yet have a well-defined wellness strategy in their corporate culture.
Wellness and mental and physical health mean different things to each of us, which depends on a number of factors including individual motivations and work-life balance that is closely related to personal age, life plan, social and economic conditions.
Organizations that want to invest in workers’ health and well-being first need to co-construct together the meaning of individual well-being through listening, dialogue and discussion, relating it to the values of the organization and the achievement of business results.
This can be accomplished with various methodologies: surveys, focus groups, team building that allow for needs analysis, building a common meaning of well-being and defining ad hoc training programs.
From our experience, one of the most requested courses currently concerns stress management, and the first step is to define its meaning in that context and for each person who is involved in the project.
The issue of health and well-being, in order to have a real impact, needs to be addressed by organizations in a holistic and systemic way by supporting people to develop awareness of their mental and physical health and well-being status and to enhance it with ad hoc training programs.
How?
By analyzing awareness, considering from the organizational point of view the industry and market context in which it operates, organizational strategy, corporate values, economic-financial data, and the personal point of view by defining and measuring the variables that have a concrete impact on one’s well-being including individual motivations, relational needs, work-life balance, and emotional state.
Empowerment occurs with human resource policies that include wellbeing programs and strategies and ad hoc training interventions, delivered on an ongoing basis so as to support and improve individual health and well-being to achieve corporate goals
A holistic approach to people’s health in business facilitates the relationship between well-being, happiness and productivity.
A 2019 study by the Oxford iOpener Institute found that employees who feel happy in the workplace are 65 percent more energetic and more likely to sustain their work for a long period of time.
By putting in place welfare strategies and programs to take care of employees’ physical and psychological well-being, many more aspects can be improved, thus succeeding in building and consolidating a sphere of optimism that positively affects the company.
Corporate training aimed at individual well-being helps workers feel better about themselves and experience their work better, within a healthy environment that is attentive to their needs.
There is a need to put the person at the center of the company, with an increasingly human centric approach , using all useful tools to promote and maintain individual well-being and greater productivity.
